Professional Practice

My main ambition is to become a television Producer. Having acted as the role of Producer in all of my past projects since college and conducting extensive research in to the profession, I now have a strong grasp of what skills are needed for the job. Through this I know that I have strong communication, management, research and decision making skills which are all incredibly important aspects of the job.

However, I do need to improve my editing and storytelling skills in particular as they are my weakest. Along with this I am also constantly trying to increase my technical, internet coding and media law knowledge.

I am keen to work on atleast one interactive project in the near future. This is not only because I thoroughly enjoyed working on the interactive platform of my last project but also because with the needs of audiences today, interactivity is becoming a much more popular form of story telling. To be able to show that I not only aknowledge that but can also contribute to the up and coming market, is something that I believe I will find invaluable in the future when applying for jobs and working in the industry on any type of project.

Producers need to have an understanding of all aspects of production and therefore, in third year I intend to not only produce as many projects as possible but to also; write atleast one script, work on the interactive platform of a project that I have already begun to plan and to work on my camera operator and editing skills for another personal project. I already have an idea for the project I am writing a script for and over summer, will start this process and pitch it to my peers. The project will have the aim of meeting the requirements of a television programme layout rather than a film. This concept could show my dedication to television production on if produced and added to my portfolio.
Although it is important to enhance my skills as much as possible throughout my last year of university, I most importantly need to create a much more impressive showreel to help me get as much work experience as possible. – This is something that I am greatly lacking in. Unfortunately, many people have degrees these days and to stand out from the crowd and prove dedication to the industry and a particular career path, most employers will now look at what range of work experience you have. This makes it an invaluable factor that I must work on ready for when applying for jobs, making connections and getting a taster of the career I could have.

I also have plans to do a ‘Masters Degree in Broadcast Journalism’ and will create work that will help with my application. I have chosen broadcast journalism because all producers need to be strong storytellers. Especially when working in the news, journalism is an important form of storytelling to practise. It will also mean that my degree gives me a broad three years of practical/technical experience where as the masters will then top it up with an intensive understanding of audiences, ethics and storytelling.
